Size: 57,662 acres.
Established: Established on January 3, 1975.
Location:Near Titusville and New Smyrna Beach on Florida's east coast. Accessible via US 1, I-95, and Route 528 (Bee Line Expwy.). The northern access, New Smyrna Beach, is on Route A1A. The southern access, Titusville, is on Route 406/402. Playalinda Beach is reached via Route 402.
Facilities:Primitive campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), boat ramp, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Camping, hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, bird-watching, horseback riding, wildlife viewing (including turtle watches in June and July), auto touring, guided tour.
Special Features:Twenty-five miles of undeveloped barrier island preserve the natural beach, dune, marsh, and lagoon habitats for a variety of wildlife, including many species of birds. The Kennedy Space Center occupies the southern end of the island and temporary closures are possible due to launch-related activities. The area includes a portion of 140,393-acre Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (see separate entry in national wildlife refuges section), administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
