Avachinskaia Sopka

(also Avacha), an active volcano in the southeastern part of Kamchatka, near the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii. It has an elevation of 2,741 m. A central cone with a young crater rises within the ancient crater. The mountain is composed of andesitic and basaltic lavas, tuffs, slags, and cinders. There have been 15 eruptions since the 1730’s, the most recent in 1926, 1938 (three), and 1945. At the base of the mountain there are a stony birch forest and elfin woodlands. There is a volcanologic station at the level of 1,000 meters.
