A positive-pressure oxygen air lock for the resuscitation and oxygenation of distressed infants delivered by C-section.The device was designed to replicate the alternating pressure changes produced by the uterus during labour. The BAL was introduced in 1950, became wildly popular, but was abandoned after 1956 when definitive studies at Johns Hopkins proved that the device was ineffective.
