an elevation, such as a mountain or a hill, that towers over the surrounding locality.

Commanding features are determined from the map or by sight and marked on the map with bolder type. Control of a commanding feature ensures better conditions for combat operations and for observation of the terrain, one’s own troops, and enemy troops.
