Candia, Alberto

 

Born 1918; died 1948. Figure in the working-class movement of Paraguay.

Candia played an active role in the student movement of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. Later he headed the union of dock workers and joined the Paraguayan Confederation of Workers. After joining the Paraguayan Communist Party (PCP), he enjoyed much authority in the working-class movement. Beginning in 1945 he occupied a number of leading posts in the PCP, becoming general secretary of its Central Committee in 1947. In 1948 he was arrested and after brutal torture was murdered in prison.
