Electrical Engineering Institute

(full name, V. I. Lenin All-Union Electrical Engineering Institute; VEI), an institute in Moscow under the direction of the Ministry of the Electrical Engineering Industry of the USSR. It was founded in 1921 as the State Experimental Electrical Engineering Institute; the present name was adopted in 1927.

The institute conducts research and experimental design work in high-voltage engineering, high-voltage switching equipment, high-voltage DC power transmission, semiconductor devices, and automatic regulation for power systems. It includes divisions in Tol’iatti, Istra, Yerevan, Minusinsk, Volzhskii, and Belaya Tserkov’ as well as a pilot plant. Prominent scientists who have worked at the institute include S. I. Vavilov, B. A. Vvedenskii, V. I. Veksler, K. A. Krug (the institute’s first director), G. S. Landsberg, S. A. Lebedev, V. I. Popkov, K. I. Shenfer, and M. V. Shuleikin. The institute offers residence and correspondence graduate study. Its scientific council has the right to accept defenses of dissertations for the doctoral and candidate degrees. The institute has published Trudy VEI (Transactions of the VEI) since 1924.

The institute has been awarded the Order of Lenin (1947) and the Order of the October Revolution (1971).
