Established: Authorized on November 2, 1994.
Location:The Cane River National Heritage Area extends approximately a mile on either side of the Cane River from the southern boundary of the City of Natchitoches to Monette's Ferry, Louisiana. The headquarters for the national historical park is at Oakland Plantation in Natchitoches Parish. Take I-49 to Exit 127 (Flora/Cypress Exit), then east 1.5 miles on Hwy. 120. Cross over LA 1 onto LA 494, then 4 miles on Hwy. 494 to Oakland Plantation. The park will be to the west.
Facilities:None at the present time.
Activities:Ranger-guided tours of the Oakland Plantation and of the grounds of the Magnolia Plantation.
Special Features:Park preserves significant landscapes, sites, and structures associated with the development of Creole culture in both urban and rural settings. Oakland Plantation, the outbuildings of Magnolia Plantation, Cane River corridor, the historic district of the town of Natchitoches, and the Fort Jessup and Las Adaes sites are important components.
