Chillán, Nevados de Chillán, Nevados de, stratovolcano complex, Bíobío region, S central Chile, in the Andes. One of the country's most active volcanoes, it consists of three overlapping peaks; the highest, at 10,538 ft (3,212 m), is Cerro Blanco, or Volcán Nevado, in the northwest. Volcán Viejo, or Volcán Chillán, 10,135 ft (3,089 m), in the southeast, was the most active vent during the 17th to 19th cent. Volcán Nuevo, 10,377 ft (3,163 m), located between the two, began forming in 1861 and has been the most active since then. The area is popular with skiers and there are several resorts. |
