(real name, Ismail Iusuf ogly Gadzhiev-Dagestanly). Born Dec. 24, 1906 (Jan. 6, 1907), in the village of Zarne, Zakataly District, now Kakhi Raion, Azerbaijan SSR. Soviet Azerbaijani actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1940.

Dagestanly graduated from the Theatrical Technicum in Baku in 1930 and from the department of philology of the University of Azerbaijan in 1957. Beginning in 1930 he performed primarily at the Azizbekov Azerbaijan Theater. He was the first in the Azerbaijani theater to portray V. I. Lenin, whom he played in Kapler and Zlatogorova’s Lenin in 1918 and in Pogodin’s The Kremlin Chimes. His performances as S. M. Kirov in Mamedkhanly’s Morning of the East and in Medzhnunbekov’s Bay of ll’ich were also the first in Azerbaijan. His other roles have included the title role in Vurgun’s Vagif, Koshkin in Trenev’s Liubov’ Iarovaia, and the title role in Shakespeare’s Othello. He has also appeared in motion pictures.

Dagestanly received the State Prize of the USSR in 1948 and the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1972. Dagestanly has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
