Dahlak

Dahlak

an archipelago in the southwestern part of the Red Sea, separated from the African coast by the Massawa Channel. Part of Ethiopia, it consists of two large islands— Dahlak-Kebir (approximately 750 sq km)—and Norah (approximately 130 sq km)—and more than 120 small islands, most of which are uninhabited. The islands are surrounded by coral reefs and contain palm groves. The population engages in trapping turtles, fishing for shark, and diving for pearl and mother-of-pearl. The main city is Nokra.
