 [ep-u´lis] (pl. epu´lides) (Gr.) any tumor of the gingiva.giant cell epulis (epulis gigantocellula´ris) a sessile or pedunculated lesion of the gingiva, or less often the mucous membrane covering edentulous ridges; it is an inflammatory reaction to injury or hemorrhage.

(ĕp-ū′lĭs) plural.epulides [Gr. epoulis, a gumboil] 1. A fibrous sarcomatous tumor having its origin in the periosteum of the lower jaw. 2. A nonpathological softening and swelling of the gums due to hyperemia that begins during midtrimester pregnancy and subsides after delivery.
