CannesCannes(kän), town (1991 pop. 69,363), Alpes-Maritimes dept., SE France. An important and fashionable resort on the French Riviera, Cannes also has shipbuilding and textile industries. Napoleon I landed nearby on his return (1815) from Elba. Churches from the 16th and 17th cent. are in the old part of town. A port and transportation junction. Cannes is the site of the International Film Festival (since 1946; in the Palais des Festivals). It has an extensive hotel industry; other industries (textiles, garments, food) are primarily concerned with serving the resort population. There is an aircraft plant. The city is picturesquely situated along a gulf; the old city is west of the port. Cannes is part of the group of famous resorts that make up the French Riviera, located on the Côte d’Azur. It is a major tourist center. The climate is subtropical Mediterranean; summers are very warm and dry (average July temperature, 22.6°C), and winters very mild and sunny (average January temperature, 9.3°C). Annual precipitation is 580 mm. The resort offers sunbathing, fresh air, and sea bathing (June to mid-October) and treats patients with fundamental disorders of the nervous system, overweight problems, chronic diseases of the respiratory organs, and some diseases of the cardiovascular system and the kidneys. Cannes has sanatoriums, solariums, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy clinics, boardinghouses, hotels, and an excellent sandy beach.
