Derevenskaia Bednota

(The Village Poor), a daily peasant newspaper that was published in Petrograd from Oct. 12(25), 1917, to Mar. 6, 1918. It began publishing as an organ of the Military Organization under the Central Committee of the RSDLP (Bolshevik). Numbers 39 through 47 were put out under the name Derevenskaia bednota i trudovoe kazachestvo, as an organ of the Military Organization under the Central Committee of the RSDLP(B) and the Bolshevik faction at the Second All-Russian Peasant Congress; after the 48th issue its name again became Derevenskaia bednota. There were 107 issues in all, with a circulation of 40,000.

Derevenskaia bednota published statements by V. I. Lenin ; party decisions, proclamations, decrees and other documents of the Council of People’s Commissars and the Petrograd Military Revolutionary Committee; and resolutions of soldier assemblies and peasant meetings. In March 1918, according to a decision of the Central Committee of the RCP (Bolshevik), it was merged with two other newspapers, Derevenskaia pravda and Soldatskaia pravda, and became Bednota.
