Drangiana

(in classical and Iranian sources also spelled Zarangiana, Zranka, and Zarang), an ancient Iranian region in the basin of Lake Hamun and near the mouth of the Helmand (in the border region between modern Iran and Afghanistan). Under the Achaemenid kings in the Hellenistic period (Drangiana is first mentioned in the Bisutun inscription), this region was one of the most important in eastern Iran. With the coming of the Sakas at the end of the second century B.C., Drangiana gradually came to be known as Sakastan (Seistan). In the first century B.C., Drangiana was also the name of a province adjacent to Sakastan; under the Sassanians, Drangiana was a region in Sakastan.
