Antonio Quiroga

Born 1784 in Betanzos; died 1841 in Madrid. Spanish revolutionary.

Quiroga was a naval officer by training. From 1808 to 1813 he took part in the campaigns of the Spanish Army against the French forces of occupation. He was one of the organizers of the revolt of 1815 and the conspiracy of 1819, which aimed at restoring a constitutional regime in Spain. He was also active in the Spanish revolution of 1820–23. In the Cortes, he was a representative of the left wing (the exaltados). In the summer of 1823, he was made commander of forces fighting the royalists in Galicia. The downfall of the revolution forced his emigration, but he returned to Spain in 1833 after the declaration of an amnesty.
