de Rivera, José (b. José A. Ruiz)

(1904–85) sculptor; born in West Baton Rouge, La. His family moved to New Orleans (1910). He adopted his maternal grandmother's name and worked in foundries. He moved to Chicago (1924), where he attended The Studio School (1928–31), and settled in New York City (1930). He is known for his lyrical abstract metal sculptures, as in Construction #190 (1980).
