a British daily newspaper. It has been published under this name since 1937, after the merger of the Daily Telegraph (founded in 1855) and the Morning Post (founded in 1772). The newspaper is actually a mouthpiece for the leadership of the Conservative Party and is aimed at readers from the bourgeoisie, official-dom, and the intelligentsia. It has a circulation of more than 1.4 million (1973). A short version of the newspaper’s name—Daily Telegraph —is widely used.
