It forms part of the Croatian-Hungarian border before joining the Danube River E of Osijek. The Mur River is its chief tributary. The lower course of the Drava is navigable.

High water is in spring; there are summer and fall floods (inundations are common), and low water is in the winter. The average water discharge at the mouth is 610 m³/sec; the greatest discharge is more than 2,500 m³/sec. There is a network of large hydroelectric power plants in Austria and Yugoslavia. The river is navigable up to the city of Villach in Austria (650 km from the mouth). The cities of Villach (Austria) and Maribor, Ptuj, Varazdin, and Osijek (Yugoslavia) are located on the Drava.
