(Polygonum tinctorium ), a plant of the genus Polygonum, family Polygonaceae; an annual plant native to East Asia. Chinese indigo was formerly cultivated in the southern Ukraine and the Caucasus for its blue dye, indigo, which is now produced synthetically. Thus it is no longer cultivated and is found only rarely as a wild or dispersed plant.
