Medium-carbon ferromanganese, containing 86–89 percent Mn and up to 1.5 percent C, and low-carbon (purified) ferromanganese, containing 86–89 percent Mn and up to 0.5 percent C, are obtained in ore heat-treating furnaces by the silicothermic method from silicomanganese, manganese concentrates, and low-phosphorus manganese slag. Ferromanganese is used for the deoxidizing and alloying of steel. In addition to ferromanganese, metallic manganese, obtained through electrothermic and electrolytic methods is also produced. Purified, nitrided ferromanganese (approximately 6 percent N) and metallic manganese are obtained by holding the alloy or metal in powder form in a nitrogen atmosphere at a temperature of 900°C. |
