fingers crossed

An expression of hope for good luck or that something will happen. A truncated version of the phrase "keep your fingers crossed." The actual gesture, which does not have to accompany the phrase, involves crossing one's middle finger over the index finger as a superstition believed to bring good luck or ward off bad luck. I studied for that exam for two weeks, so I hope I get a good grade on it. Fingers crossed! Fingers crossed my packages get delivered in time for Christmas!See also: crosse, finger
