Any of a group of chemical preservatives that the FDA classifies as GRAS (generally regarded as safe) food additives, a category first conceptualised in the 1958 Amendment to the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. GRAS preservatives include the antioxidants butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), propylparaben, sodium nitrate, sodium nitrite, benzoic acid, stannous chloride and others.
