Committee on Affairs of the Kingdom of Poland

under Emperor Alexander II, the highest consultative body for discussing the reforms that were undertaken in response to the Polish Uprising of 1863–64 and aimed at the systematic russification of the Kingdom of Poland. The committee functioned from Feb. 25, 1864, to May 29, 1881. Its chairman was Tsar Alexander II, and in his absence it was headed by Prince P. P. Gagarin (until 1872) and Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich (until 1881). The members of the committee included ministers and several other high officials. The committee worked closely with His Imperial Majesty’s Chancellery on Affairs of the Kingdom of Poland (which drafted the laws) and the State Council (the final consultative authority on legislation). After the committee was abolished, its duties were transferred to the Committee of Ministers.
