Damdinsuren, Tsendein

Born Sept. 14, 1908, in what is now the Eastern Aimak. Mongolian writer and scholar. First published in 1926. His chief works are the novella Rejected Girl (1929; Russian translation, 1958), the first major work of modern Mongolian prose; the poem My Gray Mother (1934; Russian translation, 1958); the stories “Both Are My Sons” and “Tale of Wishes”; and verses, including “North Star” and “The Lenin Museum.” In 1966 he published the collection of stories Strange Wedding. Damdinsuren’s scholarly works, including The Historical Roots of the Geseriada (1957), On the Mongolian Language (1957), and Survey of Mongolian Fiction (1957), are a major contribution to scholarship. He has been awarded the State Prize of the Mongolian People’s Republic (1946, 1948, and 1951) for literary and scholarly activities.
