Andzhan, Anton Iosifovich

 

Born July 1 (13), 1892. Soviet artist and makeup man.

From 1905 to 1911, Andzhan studied and worked in a private theater workshop in St. Petersburg, after which he worked as a makeup man in various theaters. He began work at the Goskino Film Studio in 1925, the Lenfilm Studio in 1927, and the Mosfilm Studio in 1945. He is a master of artistic makeup. He aided in the creation of many important roles and also created the makeup for historical characters in the films Fragment of the Empire (1929), Chapaev (1934), The Youth of Maksim (1935), Deputy of the Baltic and The Return of Maksim (1937), Peter the First (1937, 1939), The Great Citizen (1938, 1939), Man With a Gun (1938), The Defense of Tsaritsyn (1942), Admiral Nakhimov (1947), The Third Blow (1948), Taras Shevchenko (1951), At the Start of the Century (1961), Appassionato (1963), The Sixth of July (1968), and others. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1949 and has been awarded the Badge of Honor and medals.
