Das, Chittaranjan
Born Nov. 5. 1870. in Calcutta; died June 16. 1925. in Darjeeling. Leader in the Indian national liberation movement. A lawyer.
Das came from a family of rich Bengali landowners. Beginning in 1901 he participated in the national movement in Bengal, belonging to the left wing. From 1908 to 1917 he stayed out of active political struggle; from 1918 to 1922. a period of revolutionary upsurge, he was one of the leaders and ideologists of the right-wing group in the Indian National Congress. With Motilal Nehru, he headed the Swaraj Party from 1923 to 1925.
