endothelins endothelins A range of peptide substances, containing 21 amino acids, and believed to the most powerful known constrictors of arteries. Very tiny amounts will raise the blood pressure. One of them, ENDOTHELIN-1, derived from the ENDOTHELIUM of blood vessels, also causes constriction of BRONCHI, inhibits the release of RENIN from the kidneys and increases the strength of the heart beat. Endothelins are formed continuously in the larger arteries. Increased output can be caused by oxidized low-density lipoproteins. Endothelin receptors are ubiquitous |
