Bogdan, Ioan

 

Born July 25, 1864; died June 1, 1919, in Bucharest. Rumanian historian and Slavic philologist. Academician.

Bogdan studied at the universities of Iaşi, Vienna, St. Petersburg, and Kraków. From 1891 he was a professor at the University of Bucharest, where he directed the first subdepartment of Slavic philology in Rumania. In his works on history and philology Bogdan indicated the important role of the Slavs in the formation of the Rumanian literary language.
