Bogdan Istru


Istru, Bogdan Spiridonovich

 

Born Mar. 31 (Apr. 13), 1914, in the present-day village of Pistrueny, Teleneshty Raion, Moldavian SSR. Soviet Moldavian author. Member of the CPSU since 1947.

Istru graduated from the Higher Pedagogical School in las) in 1931. His first work was published in 1936, and the verse collections Incantation in 1937 and Death of an Eagle in 1938. The liberation of Bessarabia and the formation of the Moldavian SSR in 1940 served as a stimulus in Istru’s creative work. The socialist reforms in Moldavia, the achievements of the Soviet people in the struggle with fascist aggressors, and the heroic images of our contemporaries found artistic realization in the verse collections Voice of the Motherland (1946), In the Vanguard (1951), A venue of Peace ( 1953), From Shore to Shore (1958), and Selected Poems (1964) and in the narrative poems Pokhoarnele (1947), Spring in the Carpathians (1955), and Pain of the Shadows (1968). Istru’s poems have been translated into the languages of the peoples of the USSR and foreign languages. He was awarded two orders and various medals.
