Beginning in 1863, upon appointment by the Ministry of War, Bogdanovich was the official military historiographer. He was the author of many works on Russian military history of the 18th and 19th centuries and one of the authors and the editor of the second edition of Military Encyclopedic Lexicon (vols. 1–14, 1852–58) andHistorical Outline of the Activity of the Military Administration in Russia During the Period 1855–80 (vols. 1–6, 1879–81). The works of Bogdanovich, who was a representative of dvorianstvo historiography, were compiled on the basis of official documents, and they contain rich factual material.
