Bogdo Ula

(also Bogda Ola), a mountain range in China, in the Eastern Tien-Shan. It extends in a lateral direction for approximately 300 km, framing the Turfan basin in the north and the Dzhungaria Plain in the south. Maximum altitude, 5,445 m (the city of Bogdo Ula). The range is composed primarily of Precambrian and Paleozoic rock. The slopes are steep, and there are many alpinetype peaks. There are glaciers and perennial snow. In the lower belt, desert and steppe landscapes predominate; at altitudes of 1,700–2,900 m there is a belt of meadows and coniferous forests (mainly on the northern slopes), and at 2,900–3,700 there are highmountain shrubs and alpine meadows; a nival belt is found even higher.
