Bogoliubov, Nikolai

Born Oct. 22, 1899, in the village of Ivanovskoe, now in Lipetsk Oblast. Soviet Russian actor. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1945). Member of the CPSU since 1950.

Bogoliubov studied in the studio attached to the Riazan’ Theater and then became an actor in that theater. In 1926 he graduated from one of the state experimental theatrical studios—the studio of the First Theater of the RSFSR (which subsequently became the Meierkhol’d Theater); he began working at the Meierkhol’d Theater in 1923. From 1938 to 1958 he was with the Moscow Art Theater. Heroic characters have been especially dear to Bogoliubov’s creative work. His art organically combines a high degree of emotion with simplicity, and his heroes are profoundly humane and courageous. Bogoliubov’s best stage roles include Chub, the leader of a partisan detachment in I. L. Sel’vinskii’s Army Commander 2, and Master Sergeant Bushuev in Vs. Vishnevskii’s The Last and Determined at the Meierkhol’d Theater; Rybakov in N. F. Pogodin’s The’ Kremlin Chimes; General Murav’ev in B. F. Chirskov’s The Victors; and Kondrat’ev in A. A. Kron’s Officer of the Fleet, at the Moscow Art Theater. Bogoliubov has been acting in motion pictures since 1931. His most important achievement was the role of Shakhov in the film A Great Citizen (parts 1 and 2, 1938–39). Bogoliubov’s other film roles include Nikolai Kadkin in The Outskirts, Nikolai Mironovich in The Peasants, and Nikolai Letnikov in The Seven Bold Ones. Bogoliubov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1941,1942,1946,1947, 1949, and 1950 and has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Badge of Honor, and various medals.
