Bogorad, Lawrence

(1921– ) plant physiologist; born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Brought to the U.S.A. in 1923, he taught at the University of Chicago (1948–67), then moved to Harvard (1967). A pioneer in the study of chloroplasts (chlorophyll-containing plant cell organelles), his early studies of chlorophyll synthesis in green algae (1950s) contributed to investigations of the biosynthesis of compounds with similar structure, such as hemoglobin and the cytochromes. He performed major research on accessory plant pigments (1960s) and explored the genetics of chloroplast formation (1960s).
