Bogoroditskii, Vasilii Alekseevich

 

Born Apr. 7 (19), 1857, in Tsarevokokshaisk (now Ioshkar-Ola); died Dec. 23, 1941, in Kazan. Soviet linguist.

Bogoroditskii was a student of I. A. Baudouin de Courtenay. He was also one of the representatives of the Kazan school of linguistics and a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1915). He was a professor at the University of Kazan and later at the Kazan Pedagogical Institute. He worked in the fields of general linguistics, phonetics, comparative historical grammar of the Indo-European languages, the Russian language, and Turkic linguistics. He set up Russia’s first experimental phonetics laboratory at the University of Kazan in the 1880’s.
