Established: 1980.
Location:Southeastern Louisiana along the Louisiana-Mississippi line, 9 miles north of Slidell.
Facilities:Primitive campsites, hiking trails, canoe trail.
Activities:Camping, boating, canoeing, fishing, hunting, hiking, educational programs.
Special Features:Located in the Pearl River basin, the refuge protects one of the least disturbed southern swamplands in the nation. It is unique in that its boundary extends through 2 states. Bogue Chitto means "large stream" as defined by the Choctaw Indians.
Habitats: 36,600 acres of bottomland hardwood, bayous, and sloughs.
Access: Open during daylight hours. Much of refuge is accessible by boat only.
Wild life: Endangered and threatened species include bald eagle, ringed-sawback turtle, gopher tortoise, inflated heelsplitter mussel, and Gulf sturgeon. Other wildlife present are deer, turkey, neotropicals, rabbit, raccoon, several varieties of snake, mink, skunk, wading birds, and waterfowl.
