(băth`ərst), city (1991 pop. 14,409), N N.B., Canada, on Chaleur Bay at the mouth of the Nepisiguit River. A popular beach resort, it also has 40% of Canada's reserves of lead, zinc, and silver. Its other industries include lumbering and shipbuilding.

capital of the Gambia, a seaport located on the eastern half of St. Mary Island at the mouth of the Gambia River in western Africa. Population, 38,000 (1968).

It was founded in 1816 by the English, who named it after the British minister of the colonies, Bathurst. Since the declaration of the Gambia’s independence in February 1965, Bathurst has been the capital. It is also the commercial, industrial, and financial center of the country and a major center of its processing industries, including oil-pressing, peanut cleaning and processing, tomato processing, and fish canning. Small river craft are built there. Peanuts, palm nuts, hides, and wax are exported. Bathurst is also one of the main stops on the air route between Africa and the U.S.A. The greater part of the city is occupied by one-story houses, usually made of bamboo, and is densely populated. The government and administrative buildings and most of the stores are found in the better parts of the city. A teachers college is located in the suburb of Yundum. Bathurst has an international airport.
