counterresistance

(kown″tĕr-rĭ-zĭs′tăns) A term rooted in Freudian psychoanalysis that refers to resistance by a psychotherapist that corresponds to the patient's resistance to closeness and change of life patterns. Examples include coming late to sessions, avoiding certain subjects, and fascination with the patient. Three types are countertransferance, characterological resistance, and cultural resistance.
