Bokshai, Iosif Iosifovich
Born Oct. 2, 1891, in the village of Kobyletskaia Poliana, near Rakhov. Soviet painter. People’s Artist of the USSR (1963). Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1958).
Bokshai graduated from the Budapest Academy of Arts in 1914, where he studied under I. Révész. He has worked in Uzhgorod as an artist since 1918 and as a teacher in the first art school in Transcarpathia, which was founded by him jointly with A. M. Erdeli, since 1927. Bokshai is the creator of colorful landscapes, as well as monumental paintings, genre paintings, portraits, and still lifes. His works include Bazaar in Uzhgorod (1927) and Castle in Khust (1942), both in the Transcarpathian Museum of Art in Uzhgorod, and Lake in the Mountains (1946) and Great Height (1951), both in the Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts of the Ukrainian SSR in Kiev. Bokshai has been awarded the Badge of Honor.
