Choimbol, Sonomyn
Born 1907 in Lun, Arakhangai Ai-mak. Mongolian sculptor.
Choimbol studied in Moscow under S. D. Merkurov from 1943 to 1946. He has designed severe, impassioned monuments for the squares of Ulan Bator, notably Sukhe-Bator (artificial granite, 1946) and Choibalsan (concrete, 1947), as well as smaller freestanding pieces, such as The Fighter’s Entrance (gypsum, 1958, Museum of Fine Arts of Mongolia, Ulan Bator), and portraits.
