Boldyrev, Aleksei Vasil’evich

Born Mar. 16 (27), 1780; died Aug. 17 (29), 1842, in Moscow. Russian linguist and orientalist.

Boldyrev graduated from Moscow University in 1805. He became a professor at Moscow University in 1815 and served as rector of the university from 1832 to 1837. He laid the foundations for the study of Arabic, ancient Hebrew, Persian, and other oriental languages at the university. He compiled a Short Arabic Grammar (1827), the first of its kind in the Russian language. His works An Arabic Anthology (1824), A New Arabic Anthology (1832), and A Persian Anthology (1826) were used as textbooks until the end of the 19th century.
