Boletus Scaber

a spongy mushroom of the family Boletaceae of the order Agaricales. The cap, which reaches 10 cm or greater in diameter, varies in color from white to dark gray or almost black. Below, it initially is white, turning grayish brown as it ages. The white stipe is slightly thickened at the bottom and has longitudinal white or dark scales. The flesh is white throughout.

Boletus scaber grows in forests containing birch trees. It generally appears in early summer and is found until autumn. The mushroom is edible and may be roasted, boiled, dried, or pickled. Most often encountered in damp places are B. scaber oxydabilis, whose flesh turns pink when broken, and B. scaber niveus, which has a white or nearly white cap.
