design pressure[di′zīn ′presh·ər] (civil engineering) The force exerted by a body of still water on a dam. The pressure which the dam can withstand. (design engineering) The pressure used in the calculation of minimum thickness or design characteristics of a boiler or pressure vessel in recognized code formulas; static head may be added where appropriate for specific parts of the structure.
