D0284300 (dĭz-rā′lē), Benjamin First Earl of Beaconsfield. Known as "Dizzy." 1804-1881. British politician and novelist. He served as prime minister (1868 and 1874-1880) and was instrumental in extending the power and scope of the British Empire.

He gave coherence to the Tory principles of protectionism and imperialism, was responsible for the Reform Bill (1867) and, as prime minister, bought a controlling interest in the Suez Canal. His novels include Coningsby (1844) and Sybil (1845)
