electrogalvanism

electrogalvanism

Alternative medicine
A term for the electricity generated by dental amalgams, where saliva acts as a conductant and the dissimilar metals in the mouth form electric circuits to neutralise the ionic charge. Electrogalvanism is allegedly responsible for the slow leaching of metals from amalgams, the most important of which is mercury; this low-level mercury poisoning is believed by alternative healthcare providers to be responsible for a plethora of ill-defined “evil humours”, including lack of concentration and faulty memory, insomnia, mental disorders, tinnitus, vertigo, seizures, hearing loss and eye problems.
