an old term for a malignant form of disease seen during epidemics of Asiatic cholera in which patient death occurs without onset of diarrhea.

cholera sicca

A term of historic interest that preceded recognition that fluid replacement was required to successfully treat cholera. In cholera sicca, ileus (intestinal paralysis) is the initial manifestation of Vibrio cholera infection. Because the fluid is sequestered in the small and large intestine, the volume of fluid loss due to diarrhoea is not appreciated.
