Daniel Danielopolu

Born Apr. 24, 1884, in Bucharest; died there Apr. 30, 1955. Rumanian therapeutist and physiologist. Honorary member of the Rumanian Academy (1936; from 1948, of the Academy of the Rumanian Socialist Republic).

Danielopolu received his medical education in Bucharest. From 1920 he was a professor at the therapeutic clinic of the medical faculty of the University of Bucharest. In 1935 he organized the Medical Academy (in the years 1949–69, the medical sciences section of the Academy of the Rumanian Socialist Republic) and the Institute of Biological Research (since 1949 the Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology). His principal works were devoted to research on the autonomic nervous system, the normal and pathological physiology of blood circulation, and pharmacodynamics. He proposed a method of treating cardiac insufficiency with fractional doses of strophanthin, introduced the concept of nonspecific pharmacodynamics, and worked out problems relating to immunity, allergy, rheumatism, and endemic goiter.
