Carbinol Resins

Carbinol varnishes are colorless or colored solutions of carbinol resins in ethyl Cellosolve and/or ethyl alcohol. The dry varnish residue constitutes 23–45 percent, and the drying time at 20°C is 30–90 minutes. Colorless varnishes are used for varnishing polychromatic printing products to improve their external appearance, durability, and water resistance. Colored varnishes (basic blue K dye) are used in noncopying paper reproduction (photocopying) for lacquering pencil drawings on tracing paper.

Carbinol glues are prepared from a carbinol resin base containing a filler (Portland cement) and a solvent (acetone). The shelf life of carbinol glue is 1–2.5 hr at a temperature of 5°-10°C and without exposure to direct sunlight. It is used to glue together metals, ceramics, and plastics at room temperature (aging 20–24 hr) or at 60°-70°C (aging 6–8 hr); the excess pressure during the gluing process is not less than 50 kilonewtons per square meter, or 0.5 kilogram force per square centimeter. The adhesive compound exhibits good shear strength.
