Dankov

 

a town in Lipetsk Oblast. RSFSR, on both banks of the Don River. It has a railroad station 86 km northwest of the city of Lipetsk. Population. 20.000 (1970). There is a chemical plant for organic silicon varnishes, a dolomite combine, a poultry combine, a starch plant, a dairy, and a plant for reinforced-concrete products. The town has a heat and electric power plant, a museum of local lore, and a picture gallery. Dankov was founded in 1571 for the defense of the southern borders of the Muscovite state from the raids of the Crimean Tatars. From 1778 it was the chief district town of the Riazan’ vicegerency.
