European Broadcasting Union EBU

the major international broadcasting union.

The EBU was founded on Feb. 12, 1950, by some of the states that had withdrawn from the International Broadcasting Union. Its membership (1974 data) includes 33 radio corporations of 30 countries (Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, the Vatican, and Yugoslavia) with voting rights, and 65 corporations of 41 countries (the US, Japan and several other Asian countries, and several African and Latin American countries) with a consultative voice. The supreme body of the union is the general assembly, which convenes annually; its executive body is the administrative council. In 1959 an EBU secretariat for Eurovision was set up. The EBU has its headquarters in Geneva. There is an EBU periodical, a monthly published in English as the EBU Review and in French as Revue de I’UER.
