On southeastern border of IA; established Sep 6, 1834 (prior to statehood) from Wisconsin Territory. Name Origin: For the Des Moines River, which runs through the southeastern part of the state. From French des 'of the' and moines, a form of the Indian tribal name Moingona 'river of the mounds.' French name became Riviere des Moines 'river of the monks,' because the area was explored by Catholic missionaries. Also spelled De Moin, De Moyen, and Demoine.
